Pearl

Pearl’s handmade black-clay ceramic figures from the Shadow Play series
Hand-formed black-clay figures from Pearl’s Shadow Play practice.

“When a grain of sand finds its way into a shell, the shell nurtures it into a pearl. My grain of sand is rough clay. In my hands, it becomes a pearl of my own.”

Pearl’s work begins with the female form and the quiet, tactile character of clay. Her ceramic figures are made from unglazed black clay and fired at 1,240°C. During firing, natural speckles emerge across the surface like scattered black pearls, giving each piece its own distinctive mark.

Each figure is shaped entirely by hand and finished with delicate details in slip. Expressions, makeup, hairstyles and clothing vary from one piece to the next, guided by the inspiration of the moment. Pearl leaves the raw texture of the clay and the subtle variations of the making process visible, so every work is one of a kind.

Pearl creates sculptural ceramic figures and functional objects, including candleholders, incense holders and jewellery stands. The black clay brings a quiet, tactile presence to everyday spaces. In Shadow Play, sculptural black clay and expressive gestures meet the quiet atmosphere of candlelit corners and daily rituals.
